Backpacking Checklist Template

Travel Necessities

Used to help backpackers prepare for their journey, here is a list of essential items for the trip.

Clothing

A list of the clothing items that are necessary for a backpacking trip.

  • Boots - Appropriate for the expected weather and terrain.
  • Socks - Thick material for warmth and protection from the elements.
  • Extra Layers - Layerable items such as undershirts, leggings, jackets, vests, & coats.
  • Parka or Raincoat - If necessary depending  on the expected forecast.
  • Hat - For sun protection or warmth.

Sleeping Gear

A list of the necessary sleeping supplies for a backpacking trip.

  • Tents & Stakes - Ensure all of the necessary materials are present, and that there are no tears or broken materials.
  • Sleeping Bag - Ensure that the sleeping bag has a functioning zipper and no tears.
  • Sleeping Pad - The extra cushion of support that is placed below the sleeping bag.
  • Bear Bag - Make the bag is functioning properly and has no damage.
  • Bear Bag Rope - Secure the rope, check for any tears or weak areas.
  • Hand warmers - Depending on the forecast, pack extras to ensure warmth of hands and feet.

Cooking Gear

A list of the necessary cooking utensils for a backpacking trip.

  • Food - Non-perishables, packed in light-weight, resealable containers.
  • Stove & Fuel - Check the fuel levels and ensure the stove is operating properly prior to departure.
  • Cooking Utensils - Sporks, knives, cutting boards, etc.
  • Cups - Check for no cracks. Preferably temperature insulated.
  • Bowls & Plates - Any preferred materials for eating and cooking.
  • Dish Soap - Small container, safe to use on skin. 

Cleanup Kit

A list of the necessary cleaning materials for a backpacking trip.

  • Biodegradable, environmentally-friendly soap.
  • A small tube of toothpaste.
  • A travel toothbrush.
  • Small Towel.
  • Washrag.
  • Comb.
  • Toilet Paper.

Survival

A list of the essential survival tools for a backpacking trip.

  • First-Aid kit.
  • Moleskin - to help prevent blisters.
  • Compass.
  • Whistle.
  • Compact mirror.
  • Emergency cash/card/money.
  • Extra flash-light & bulbs.
  • Extra set of durable rope.

Additional Items - Not required

This list is additional items that may enhance the experience, but are not required for the trip.

  • Camera - Bring additional, charged batteries.
  • Extra pair of shoes - light-weight, for leisure or for hiking.
  • Hiking Stick - to help with stability on rocky terrain.

Miscellaneous

This is a list of miscellaneous items that are recommended, not required, for a backpacking trip.

  • Pocketknife - Ensure this item is properly stored, and each individual is comfortable with how to operate.
  • Matches - Store responsibly, and take with you after use.
  • Water bottle or canteen - Ensure there are no holes, and the cap fits properly with no leakage.
  • Fire Starters.
  • Watch.
  • Repair Kit - for tents, clothing, etc.
  • Insect Repellant.
  • Bandanas.
  • Sunscreen.
